Diagnosing Chronic Hepatitis B
In the United States, chronic infection with hepatitis B occurs in approximately 5 to 10 percent of individuals with acute hepatitis B infection. Chronic infection ranges in presentation from the asymptomatic carrier to the patient with active chronic infection. Diagnosis of chronic infection is based on serology showing the persistence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBeAg) for more than six months.

When a patient is diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B infection, it is important to counsel them that their household members and intimate contacts should be screened and, if found susceptible, vaccinated.
